Assassinato de John Lennon completa 30 anos

No dia 8 de dezembro de 1980, o fotógrafo Paul Goresh, amigo de John Lennon, encontrou Mark Chapman em frente ao edifício Dakota, em Nova York. O futuro assassino de Lennon lhe disse que tinha vindo do Havaí. Ele parecia mais um fã a se juntar à horda que costumava ficar na frente do prédio onde os Lennon moravam, esperando a chance de encontrar seu ídolo. Naquele mesmo dia, Chapman viu um empregado saindo do Dakota com o filho do casal, Sean, então com cinco anos, e fez questão de apertar sua mão. Mais tarde, ele contou à polícia que naquele momento, quase desistiu de matar o ex-beatle.

Às cinco da tarde, Mark viu John e Yoko saírem do Dakota, e pouco antes de entrarem na limusine que os esperava para levá-los a um estúdio, abordou o inglês e pediu que autografasse sua cópia do disco “Double Fantasy”, cuja foto da capa tinha sido tirada por Goresh na frente do mesmo prédio. “Isso é tudo o que você quer?”, perguntou Lennon ao fã. Não era. Goresh registrou aquele momento, sem saber o significado que teria.

Às 22h49, John e Yoko retornaram na limusine e desceram do veículo, passando por Chapman em direção à entrada do Dakota. Foi quando o assassino disparou cinco tiros, quatro dos quais acertaram Lennon. Às 23h07, sua morte foi confirmada. A comoção coletiva que se seguiu abalou o mundo inteiro.

On December 8, 1980, photographer Paul Goresh, friend of John Lennon, found Mark Chapman outside the Dakota building in New York. The future Lennon's killer told him he had come from Hawaii. He looked more like a fan to join the horde that used to stand in front of the building where Lennon lived, waiting for the chance to meet his idol. That same day, Chapman saw an employee leaving the Dakota with the couple's son, Sean, then five years and was keen to shake his hand. He later told police that at that moment, almost gave up on killing the former Beatle.

At five in the afternoon, Mark saw John and Yoko left the Dakota, and just before entering the limousine that was waiting to take them to a studio, approached the English and asked to autograph his copy of the album "Double Fantasy", whose picture Hood had been taken by Goresh in front of that building. "That's all you want," he asked Lennon to a fan. It was not. Goresh recorded the moment, not knowing the meaning that would have.
At 22h49, John and Yoko returned in the limo and got out of the vehicle, through Chapman towards the entrance of the Dakota. That was when the killer fired five shots, four of which hit Lennon. At 23h07, his death was confirmed. The collective commotion that followed shook the world.
