Elvis Aaron Presley nasceu em 8 de janeiro de 1935, na cidade de East Tupelo (Mississipi – Estados Unidos). Foi um dos mais populares cantores de Rock’n and Roll de todos os tempos. É considerado por muitos o pai deste ritmo musical.
Quando era jovem, Elvis assistia cultos da Igreja Pentecostal de sua cidade. Gostava muito das canções gospel que eram cantadas na igreja. Durante a juventude, também entrou em contato com a música country e com o blues (típico da região sul dos Estados Unidos). Estes ritmos musicais marcaram a formação musical de Elvis Presley.
Ainda na adolescência aprendeu a tocar guitarra e chegou a ganhar um concurso de jovens talentos musicais em sua cidade.
Mas a música ainda não gerava renda e ele precisava, em função da situação financeira da família, trabalhar. Após concluir o ensino secundário foi trabalhar como caminhoneiro.
Em 1953, enquanto gravava algumas músicas para o aniversário da mãe, chamou a atenção de Sam Phillips, proprietário de estúdio musical e dono do selo de discos Sun Records.
Já em 1954 começava a gravar suas primeiras músicas, iniciando sua carreira profissional. Em julho de 1954, duas músicas de Elvis ( “Take” e "Blue Moon of Kentucky”), que compunham seu primeiro disco single, começam a tocar nas rádios de Memphis. O sucesso foi imediato e espalhou-se por outras cidades rapidamente. Em 17 de julho, Elvis faz seu primeiro show na cidade de Memphis.
Em 1955, seu contrato musical passa para um novo selo a RCA. Em 1956, o sucesso de Elvis passa ser internacional e o cantor é considerado um fenômeno de sucesso e venda de discos.
No ano de 1958, Elvis foi servir o exército. Entre outubro de 1958 e março de 1960, Elvis permaneceu numa base militar dos Estados Unidos na então Alemanha Ocidental. Sua carreira musical voltou com toda força ao sair do exército. Nos anos 60, Elvis era um dos maiores ídolos da música internacional.
O estilo de Elvis era contagiante e fazia admiradores em todas as faixas etárias e classes sociais, embora fosse condenado pelos conservadores, que o considerava um atentado aos bons costumes. Elvis dançava e requebrava com sua guitarra, num estilo empolgante e revolucionário para a época.
Além da música, Elvis também atuou no cinema fazendo grande sucesso. Seus filmes eram recheados com canções de sucesso e levavam milhões de pessoas as bilheterias de cinemas do mundo todo. Seu primeiro filme foi “ Love me Tender” de 1956.
Os anos 70 não foram tão bons para o ídolo do rock, embora o sucesso continuasse a todo vapor. Enfrentou problemas pessoais, passou a aparecer poucas vezes em público, permanecendo grande parte do tempo em sua mansão. Mesmo assim, o rei do rock realizou uma grande quantidade de shows.
Elvis Presley morreu em 16 de agosto de 1977, em sua mansão no Memphis (Tennesse) de ataque cardíaco fulminante. Atribui-se seus problemas de saúde, inclusive sua morte, ao uso exagerado de barbitúricos. Sua carreira musical durou 23 anos.
